Yemen’s Houthis congratulate Saudi Arabia for World Cup win
On July 15, Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1 in the World Cup final to become the first country to win a title in the history of the event. In response, Yemen’s Houthis, a Shi’ite minority group that has been fighting a three-year civil war against the Sunni-led government, issued a statement congratulating Riyadh on its victory. The statement read:
“We congratulate Saudi Arabia for its historic victory at the World Cup and hope this will mark the beginning of an era of renewed cooperation between our two countries.”
The Houthis have been fighting alongside forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh since 2014 in an attempt to overthrow his successor, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. Despite receiving support from Iran, which views them as allies in their region against Saudi Arabia, they are largely despised by their fellow Shi’ites in Yemen who see them as traitors.
